Dozen Medium Crabs, Brooklyn Crab

In Maryland, you have not had a true taste of summer until you’ve eaten blue crabs coated in Old Bay and served with a pitcher of cold, cheap beer in a shack right on the water. You get to this place by boat (often the fastest way), and spend the better part of an afternoon picking chunks of crab meat out of cracked shells. And yes, it is worth the effort.

Recipe: DIY Maryland Crab Feast

For some non-Marylanders, the task of opening and eating a hardshell crab can be daunting. But for the truly obsessed, eating them is just the beginning. What if you didn’t just steam and eat the crabs yourself, but caught them from the Chesapeake Bay for a DIY crab feast? This weekend we took the boat out with my brother and his wife, an experienced crabbing team, and learned how to catch them.  (more…)

Hammer and Claws Blue Crab Festival

Live Blue Crabs, Hammer and Claws

If you live in New York and love food, chances are you’ve been to some pretty disappointing food festivals. Many are plagued by long lines, small portions, huge crowds, dwindling food supplies, limited selection and VIP favoritism. So it was a relief to find that last weekend’s Hammer and Claws Blue Crab Festival, an all-you-can-eat crab feast in NYC benefitting the Chesapeake’s Save the Bay Foundation, was the exact opposite. Cantler’s Crab Shack, Maryland

On a recent weekend, we set out to do what so many Marylanders do as soon as the weather gets hot: head out to a crab shack to feast on piles of hard shell blue crabs.

Cantler’s holds a place of honor among crab shacks. It’s so popular that it’s even included on nautical charts of the Chesapeake Bay – all the better for getting there by boat. (more…)
