Tomato Red Maxi Skirt, Parsons MFA

A brightly colored, sheer maxi skirt like this one from Topshop goes easily from daytime to an after-work party. Anna, a guest at the Parsons First Eighteen exhibit, paired it with simple black and white on top, but the suede platform sandals add another pop of color.

White Lace Dress, Parsons MFA Exhibit

Another variation on the little black dress is this season’s little white dress. Designer Jie Li, standing here in front of her work, wore a little white dress with lace edging and a white crocheted cardigan to Monday’s party for the first graduating class of Parsons MFA students, the First Eighteen.

Black Lace Party Dress, Parsons MFA Exhibit

The little black dress is great for a party no matter what the time of year. Designer Jade Rozenbroek wore a lace dress by COS with polka dot tights to her show at the First Eighteen, the Parsons MFA exhibit. Lace also plays a part in her designs for Jack & Jade, pictured after the jump.

The First Eighteen: Parsons MFA Exhibit

Parsons feted its first graduating class of fashion MFA students with an exhibit and party on Monday. The new program, which was partially funded by Parsons alum Donna Karan, has produced some incredibly talented new designers whose clothing wouldn’t be out of place hanging next to much more established brands. Particularly interesting was a willingness to experiment with cutting edge technology in fabric design and technique. Here are a few highlights from the show.  (more…)

Zanna Roberts Rassi at the Parsons MFA Exhibit

Marie Claire editor Zanna Roberts Rassi arrived at Monday’s Parsons MFA exhibit looking just as chic as she does during fashion week. We’ve been seeing bright pants on a lot of trendsetters now, but what makes her look particularly cool is how she pairs these Christopher Kane for J Brand neon-bright yellow jeans with a classic military drab jacket. She’s customized the jeans by tucking the flared leg into her lace-up boots. Love it.

Summer Layers, Outside the Parsons Fashion Show

This struck me as the perfect outfit for summer travel: a lightweight white tunic top with chunky necklace over a colorful pink minidress (which could be its own outfit on another day/night). The stacked heel sandals balance it all out – and you can walk in them.

Parsons BFA Fashion Show 2011

Many of the looks at Monday’s fashion show of graduating Parsons BFA students were so polished that it prompted designer host Reed Krakoff to say: “I feel like I should go back to school.” There were certainly a lot of references in the students’ work – at times we wanted to shout out “Prada!” “Celine!” “Jil Sander!” at different outfits coming down the runway – but what was interesting is how the work diverged from the big design houses.

The idea that hemlines have to be either short, long or knee length was cast aside in favor of skirts, tunics, shorts and pants that were multilayered, often in sheer fabric. There was plenty of draping for draping’s sake – extra swags added just for ornamentation. Influences spanned the globe from Africa to Afghanistan. All in all the show was a breath of fresh air in the New York fashion world. And who knows which one of these kids will be the Marc Jacobs of tomorrow? Some highlights from the show, after the jump.

70s Jeans and PS1 Bag, Parsons Fashion Show

This outfit looks so sleek and classic you could almost forget it includes one of the trendier items of spring 2011, 70s wide legged, high-waisted jeans. In fact this is a great way to wear them: with design standards like Ray Ban Wayfarers, a white silk blouse and that other new classic: the Proenza Schouler PS1 bag in caramel leather.
