Street Chic: Black Vintage Jacket and Sequin Shorts, Jazz Age Lawn Party

At this weekend’s Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island, there was a surprising crossover between 1920s looks and goth in several of the guests. Both aesthetics are related to Steampunk and involve a lot of attention to detail, vintage, and a love of costuming. The mashup was pretty brilliant on this young woman, who wore a black vintage jacket with her black sequin shorts and black hat, nicely contrasting with cherry-red lipstick. Very cool personal style.

This fun, transitional look outside the Jil Sander show could easily go from day to night – especially if you work in fashion. The sequins give it bling; the oversized sweater keeps it all down to earth. The one punch of color? Her blue suede shoes.

Balmain SS2011

Before there were slim cut cargo pants on every retail floor on every corner, there were slim cut cargo pants on the runway at Balmain. This French label spearheaded the military chic trend that has resonated with consumers over the past few seasons. Slightly androgynous but always sexy, Christophe Decarnin’s designs have quite a following, as evidenced by the cool crowd outside the Le Grand Hotel.
