So apparently there’s this neighborhood in New York called the “Upper West Side.” Who knew? As a downtowner I rarely go above 23rd Street, but much to my surprise a whole crop of fancy stores has opened up on Columbus Avenue near the 72nd Street 2/3 express stop. Stroll past Maje, Theory and Reiss and you’ll find the newish Maille mustard store, a little slice of Paris in New York.  (more…)

What to Eat at the 2012 US Open

Major sporting events aren’t exactly known for their food, but the team behind the US Open is trying to change all that. This year they’ve brought in Iron Chef Masaharu Morimito and celebrity chefs David Burke and Tony Mantuano to create menus for several restaurants in the massive USTA center. Think butter-poached lobster, Montauk striped bass and steak, not the stadium standard of nachos smothered in Cheez Whiz. At a tasting yesterday, we got a sneak preview of several of the dishes on offer. The food here should be reason enough to carve out some time during your US Open trip for a nice meal, courtside.

The Great Googa Mooga: A Blow by Blow Account

Food Tour: Arthur Avenue

The mission was tough: Take the train up to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and eat as much food as possible in a four-hour window. But, lured by the promise of an old Italian neighborhood full of pizza, fresh pasta, fish mongers and butchers and guided by an Italian-American sailor friend who’s been going there forever, we were up to the challenge.
