Flashback to last winter’s deep freeze: if in doubt, pile on the layers, as Taylor Tomasi Hill did outside Milk Studios during last February’s New York Fashion Week.
Winter is coming to New York City, but that hasn’t deterred people from biking around town. A man wore a hat, scarf and gloves as he biked through Astor Place one morning.
One upshot of the wane of skinny jeans: denim has become a lot less conformist. Outside the Max Mara show, a guest wore an oversized denim jacket and pants with contrasting cuffs for a cool spin on this workday staple.
Gucci again made waves in the fashion industry by announcing they would show both menswear and womenswear with one show starting in 2017. (Let’s hope it falls during women’s fashion week.) Outside the fall 2016 show, Bryanboy sported Alessandro Michele’s boundary-pushing designs for the label. It may be pajama dressing, but it sure looks luxe.
Spring is the time to experiment with different textures and colors now that we can finally shed some layers. Model Irina Liss exited the Margiela show in a black and white leather jacket with sheen. A long skinny silk scarf is the perfect spring accessory.
Molto Italiano: a classic menswear look on Fabrizio Oriani of Gentlemen’s Wear Daily outside the Emporio Armani show. And yes, more mustard yellow!
Have you any Grey Poupon? Mustard yellow is shaping up to be a big color right now and for fall 2016. Margaret Zhang exited the Fendi show in an oversize mustard coat and Fendi bag and pants.
A flash of red at the Tommy Hilfiger show provides a graphic punch on the streets as winter winds down.
Kind of obsessed with this retro look on Sofia Sanchez Barrenechea at the Elie Saab couture show this summer. The glasses! Also, after a few seasons of not seeing jeans because of overall skinny jean fatigue, denim may be back in a big way on the streets this fall, in a variety of cuts and washes. It’s that ’70s thing, as spurred on by the new Gucci collection.
One of my favorite model-off-duty looks outside the couture shows in Paris. Model Cris Herrmann isn’t wearing anything particularly expensive but shows great personal style with a long red silk scarf tied once at the neck, oversize cloth bag and baggy (vintage?) jeans. Très chic.
Consider it pre-fall: Rachel Zoe wore black culottes and a black and white fur scarf to the Gucci show in New York. Her husband Rodger Berman looked perfectly preppily turned out in a navy blazer and dark wash jeans.
Outside the Stella McCartney resort show on Monday, Harley Viera-Newton was one of several trendsetters we’ve seen recently to sport a small scarf tied at the neck. This is also a great idea for music festivals, where you can try this trick with a bandana.
I love how top model Saskia de Brauw combines different layers with such panache. She exited the Mugler show in Paris wearing an oversize gray coat, skinny scarf tied at the neck, oxford and a shirt dress. And yes, that is a bike helmet in her hand. After walking the runway, she just biked home like a regular Parisian!
