Il Buco Alimentaria e Vineria
I get a little nervous about going to an Italian restaurant in New York after getting back from Italy. If the meal is bad, will it somehow wipe out the memory of how real Italian food should taste? And just as knockoffs look particularly awful after you’ve seen beautifully-crafted designer goods up close, the comparison to the real thing often doesn’t do a New York restaurant any favors.
So by the time the check came at the Il Buco Alimentari e Vineria on Great Jones Street, I breathed a sigh of relief. This new restaurant and Italian grocery, the younger sibling of Il Buco on Bond Street, may not be exactly like Italy, but the differences are purely New York. (more…)
Christene Barberich at Yigal Azrouel
Layers, layers, layers are the key to dressing for chilly spring weather, as Refinery 29 editor Christene Barberich demonstrates outside the Yigal Azrouel show. Another good idea is to swap out black for navy, a more upbeat neutral for spring. The graphic embroidered edge of her jacket and polka-dot socks keep it lively.

New Accessory Line: Sequence
Fashion stylist and former InStyle staffer Ariela Suster recently returned to her native El Salvador to create a line of jewelry and bags. The results were on display at the launch party at Poppy last night: handmade, high-quality accessories that incorporate traditional El Salvadoran craftwork with great materials.
Gastronomie 491
One of the things I miss most about Milan and Paris is not, as you might expect, fancy restaurants. What I do miss are the numerous coffee counters in Milan when you could just step in and get an excellent-quality espresso or macchiato for a couple of euros and down it in an instant. In Paris, I miss the gourmet take-out shops right near the Saint Paul metro stop: Aux Désirs de Manon for bread and quiche, Au Sanglier for beautiful terrines, and Pascal Trotté for cheese. There was never any reason to cook anything, even though I had a kitchen there, when there was so much tempting food to take home.
Finally New York is catching up to Europe with the introduction of Gastronomie 491 to the Upper West Side. This little shop has all kinds of salads, meat, fish and sides you might like for a home cooked meal – if you actually felt like cooking. But why bother when chef Steven Gutterman can do it for you, most likely with much better results?

Amanda Brooks at Rodarte
Nooo! Fashion director Amanda Brooks has left Barneys NY to move to London. Wherever she lands, let’s hope she’ll keep going to fashion shows, because she’s been a lot of fun to photograph during fashion week. Here she is on Valentine’s day, going to the Rodarte show in a cute striped Comme des Garcons top, knit scarf and red belt tied just so. Her great style and innovative designer collaborations at Barneys will be missed in NYC.

Ruby Aldridge at Ports 1961
You may have already seen this image in some incarnation or other, since there were a lot of us street style photographers on the scene, but I just love model Ruby Aldridge. The idea to pose on the railing outside the Ports 1961 show, with the monolithic New York Public Library rising behind her, was actually hers. What an eye. The hat is Rag & Bone.

Preppy Fashion, Outside Ralph Lauren
Preppy fashion is always at home at a Ralph Lauren show. It’s risky to belt a navy puffer vest, worn over a black and white print sweater and yet another layer underneath, yet somehow the whole look comes together beautifully.

All Over Florals, Outside Rodarte
Florals from head to toe have never looked as good as they do this season, especially in pants suits. A distressed leather jacket makes the outfit more edgy than garden party.

The Bowery Diner
When Mathieu Palombino, the French-trained chef who conquered the genre of pizza at Motorino, decided to turn his exacting attention to the American diner, it was exciting news. To what heights would he take the lowly tuna melt, the burger, the “diet plates” heretofore characterized by Jello and cottage cheese? The almost comically varied menu of your typical New York diner, which includes everything from fried eggs to the rarely-ordered fish of the day, seemed ripe for transformation.
But the menu is a blessing and a bane. Just as, when you sit down at your corner diner, you view the various categories on a multipage menu with skepticism – can they really make pad thai as well as they can make pancakes? – the scope of dishes the kitchen must do well proves daunting here. (more…)
