It was good to see some familiar faces at Coachella looking just as good as they do in a land far, far away called Paris fashion week. Blogger Sofie Valkiers mixed some covetable Jimmy Choo over-the-knee suede boots with a Dodo Baror jumpsuit, YSL bag and embroidered denim jacket by Levis. Also digging the layered necklaces – yes, this trend is back again.
This was the last photo I snapped before I was detained by the Coachella authorities for taking fashion photos with a 35mm camera. Pretty ridiculous. But whatever, Sofie, it was worth it!
One of the biggest trends at Coachella 2016 was not a particular piece of clothing but the fact that friends are coordinating their outfits. Sisters Valentina and Chiara Ferragni wore a crochet and lace dress respectively, and Valentina’s pearl applique went well with Chiara’s tiara. The two star bloggers know a thing or two about how social media influences women’s sartorial choices. Girls can get dressed “together” for an event even if they are miles apart.
A rule of thumb for dressing with hippie flair at music festivals: if you’re going to do it, do it with polish. A guest at Coachella weekend one went for a silk floral top that conjured up traditional embroidery patterns and topped it off with red lipstick. It also doesn’t hurt if your fringe bag is YSL.
A familiar face in the crowd, Rumi Neely, was one of several chic concert goers to opt for all white. It’s not the most practical shade for a festival, but it’s great if you’re just going to emerge from the VIP area.
I love a bandeau top for a pool party, especially in a town with retro appeal like Palm Springs. A guest mixed hers with flowy tropical print pants at the Pop Sugar party at the Avalon hotel.
Modelpalooza! Devon Windsor, Rachel Hilbert and Anouk van Kleef layered dresses and vests over shorts and bikinis at Coachella day 0ne. Also note the round sunglasses on all three of them. If you buy nothing else this summer, get yourself a pair of these for an instant update.
A cool dress in a sequin star print was just a little bit trippy and a whole lot chic at Coachella 2016 day one. Leather boots are the way to go for tromping across the dusty festival grounds. Also love the daring hair extensions.
Coachella, baby! Martha Graeff wore some great layers on day one of the festival in a 70s-inspired burnt orange that’s very on trend for 2016.
I chanced upon blogger Jenny Bernheim of Margo & Me in this cool setting at a private party at Coachella. Gladiator sandals and a Chloe bag are a great way to accessorize a simple belted dress.
Sigh – I must admit I am jealous of everyone just heading out to Coachella right now for weekend two. Still dreaming about weekend one! Model Gigi Hadid wore – what else? – Guess to day three of Coachella 2015.
Two big trends we saw at Coachella: hip bags a.k.a. fanny packs – logical because they’re a hands-free way to carry your stuff while you’re at a concert – but also ruffles, which was more surprising to me. Big feminine ruffles were everywhere on tops and dresses, perhaps stemming from the prairie chic on the runways for spring 2015.
Pretty by the pool: Alexis Ren belted an H&M dress and layered it with gold necklaces at a poolside party in Palm Springs.
There’s nothing like spending a few days in the beautiful California desert to help you fast forward to summer. I just got back from Coachella, where I was shooting fashion for the New York Times Styles section Instagram – @nytimesfashion – check out the whole slideshow of Coachella style here. There were too many good looks to include them all though, so you’ll see more Coachella fashion on Gastro Chic! Like this sheer ivory silk dress worn as a bikini coverup with a gaucho hat, fringe bag and high tops.
