In a shocking development yesterday, the New York Times replaced longtime Thursday and Sunday Styles editor Trip Gabriel with a 55-year-old white man, Stuart Emmrich. Gabriel, a 54-year-old white man, was finally deemed too young and inexperienced for the job and will now be writing a series of education-related projects for the Times.

Executive editor Bill Keller, a 61-year-old white man, said he was “continuing the theme of ‘If it ain’t broke, fix it anyway.’” He searched far and wide – as far as the Times’ own travel section – to find Emmrich, an expert on style. Sources say that the search process was particularly difficult given the shortage of style experts of any race or gender available for work right now.

Emmrich, who favors retro clothing like this ’80s Gap-style striped button down (worn ironically, of course, in 2008), was the inaugural editor of Escapes and the editor of the Times travel section, which recently ran a piece on the cutting edge resort Boca Raton, FL, where “khaki shorts and flats” are de rigueur for the stylish set. A fixture on the front row of New York fashion week, to which he usually wears a minimalist pair of Dockers, he once fell out of favor for asking Anna Wintour where she buys her sunglasses.

There is no word on whether executive editor Keller will have more of a hand in the editorial content of the Thursday and Sunday Styles sections, though he did reportedly request that the next “A Night Out With” column feature Elaine Stritch at the Carlyle.
