Street Chic: Lafayette and Prince Street, January
Posted by bellastraniera - 15/01/10 at 04:01 pm When the mercury crept up over 32 yesterday, and New Yorkers emerged from their homes and offices fashionably dressed for the cold. If, like me, you tend to wear the same thing over and over again in cold weather, these looks may give you some inspiration.December’s Street Chic focused on color, but all black will always be the uniform here. She pairs shiny black leggings with a studded down jacket and lace-up boots. Very on-trend yet very warm and practical. Slouchy knit berets are also a big favorite for women.
Trapper hats in faux or real fur do an excellent job of combating the cold.
This bright check shirt and warm neutral jacket and scarf already hint at the emergence of spring.
Satchel bags give a low-key schoolgirl look to an office outfit.
Slouchy popcorn-knit hats are the folksy headgear of choice.
Wool belted coats are a sophisticated take on a standard.
Trend alert: the ironic ski hat. The point of this one seems to be to find the most ridiculous ’80s ski hat around and wear it in the city. The look has already been spotted multiple times at night at Radegast in Williamsburg. Just thought you should be aware of the next hipster accessory fetish….
Love the clean, simple lines of this black belted coat and slouchy knit hat.
Top knots are making an appearance in the hair department. This extra volume looks cute, but let’s hope it’s not the Snooki effect.
A white cotton dress looks great layered with winter essentials like black tights, boots and a parka. Also love the northern look of a fair isle pom pom scarf and fur hat.
Circular cowl scarves are big right now, even for guys. Not only do they add an interesting sculptural element, they’re great at blocking off the cold. Like infomercial fave the Neckie, they have no chilly gaps or gaping holes! And unlike the Neckie, they don’t look dorky.
Big, chunky soft knits convey luxury without the need for logos. The beautiful tone-on-tone match of this winter white wool coat and hooded sweater is elegant and warm.
Black and white and sophisticated all over.
On the right, a daring knit turban.
Remember this look because you will see more of it: the oversize military green parka paired with leggings and citified combat boots. Oversize military parkas are already on sale at Topshop for spring. For a winter version, you could try an army navy store like Dave’s on Sixth Avenue.
