If there’s one must-rock article of clothing for summer 2010, it’s got to be shorts. From super casual to extra fancy, they’re popping up everywhere dresses and skirts used to rule, including polo games and even the red carpet. Flowy or cuffed cuts are incredibly flattering even on non-leg-models, and a staple pair of jean shorts (or two) will take you from beach to BBQ. Bonus: there are still many inexpensive pairs to be had, and a lot of designer pieces are now on sale.

12 great pairs from Topshop, McQ, Vena Cava and more.

If you can wear shorts to the office, you can wear these versatile Lark & Wolff by Steven Alan High-Waisted Shorts ($54).
Tiny floral prints popularized by Liberty are also gracing shorts these days, as on these Topshop Scatter Floral Shorts ($70). Shorts in a draped, flowy cut are really easy on the thighs.

Vena Cava Dorze Shorts ($92.50 on sale) have a cool, unusual planet pattern that calls for a night on the town.
White may be the It color of summer 2010 – and as your high school science teacher would say, it’s not even a color! J. Crew’s 3″ Chino Shorts in white ($39.50) are super sexy in an all-American way.

A great take on the khaki trend, Paper Boy Shorts ($83) are boyishly cute.

Go for color with these McQ Rolled Up Cotton Shorts ($102 on sale) in vibrant violet.

You’ll feel prepared to battle the crowds at this summer’s outdoor concerts in these Current Elliott The Army Studded Shorts ($176).

One thing to keep in mind with shorts this year is the difference in styling: shirts should be tucked into drapey, flowy cuts so you aren’t overwhelmed with fabric. Emphasize your waist with a sailor tank tucked into these ASOS Roll Down Waist Shorts ($50.73).

Last year’s boyfriend jeans have given way to a more practical trend for 90-degree days: boyfriend shorts. Wear them with an edge of pocket showing at the unfinished hem, as with these Vince Denim Faded Boyfriend Shorts ($136.50 on sale), for a real hand-me-down feel.

Ultra-short is the way to go for most of the styles this summer, but if you want to zig while the rest of the world zags, pick up a pair of these knee-length Madewell Superdestroyed Rail Straight Cutoffs ($98). The cool shredded look goes really well with a tank or oversized tee.

Just want to lounge around? Gap Jersey Knit Lounge Shorts ($24.50) are just as comfy as designer versions of the same and much less pricey – so you can take these from the streets to the beach.

And even when we have to retire our beach chairs for the season, shorts won’t be going anywhere soon. Wool-blend Paul & Joe for the Outnet Tailored Shorts ($125) will make life in the office much more tolerable come September.
