Open Toe Shoes With Sheer Stockings on Cover of WWD

As sub-freezing temperatures severely restrict footwear choices, a new fashion frontier has been conquered: open toe shoes worn with sheer stockings, as seen on the cover of today’s WWD.

WWD-stockings

This look, once the domain of misguided bridesmaids, has resurfaced in more fashionable form to show off the many black patterned stockings now available – the ones pictured are by Givenchy. With the blessing of WWD, this formerly gauche combination may just be OK. It follows on the heels of Net-a-Porter’s endorsement of opaque black tights with open-toe shoes this fall.

There are, however, some rules to follow, as can be extrapolated from the slideshow:

1. The more elaborate the stockings, the better. The point is to call attention to exquisite stockings, so do not attempt with Hanes Her Way.

2. Stick to basic black. Since we are still toeing the water with this trend, avoid any other color but deep black in sheer stockings. Nude stockings should not be worn with open-toe shoes under any circumstances.

3. No “reinforced toe.” The granny look of the reinforced toe is so not sexy.

4. Keep your pedicure simple. There will already be a lot going on visually. No need to go into sensory overload with an eye-popping nail color too – opt for a sheer, pale pink.

5. Do not combine with the shredded stockings trend. One thing we’ve learned from Lindsay Lohan: it’s a fine line between risqué and crazy.
