Must-Have Summer Shoes 2010
Posted by bellastraniera - 27/05/10 at 12:05 pm As much as we love ogling fabulous Balenciaga stilettos, flats are what we actually wear for a day of strolling around the city. In the summer months, they can be sneaks, espadrilles, sandals or ballet flats: the main criterion is comfort.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on style, as we saw on a recent day in Union Square. Here are some of the biggest trends in flat summer shoes for 2010, as seen on the street and in the stores.
Vans, Toms, and docksiders are the front runners for the shoes of the 2010 summer season. Before visions of black and white checks flash before your eyes, fear not: we mean the lace-up, nautical style Vans Authentic Core Classics ($42), which actually are great for boating. For a truly authentic worn look, dunk them in the Hudson and let them dry.
Toms, Toms, Toms: they’re everywhere! Not only do these espadrilles come in dozens of cute styles, for each pair sold, a child in a third world country gets a new pair of Toms. The blingy Toms Metallic Bennet Slip On ($85) is super chic for daytime.
If you’ve in the market for vegan shoes, Toms Blue Tangier Vegan Classics ($54) could lure anyone away from leather.
There are a number of colorful docksiders on the market now, but this summer it’s about kickin’ it old-school preppy. The solid brown Sperry Top Sider Original 2 Eye docksiders ($75) are the real deal.
Diane von Furstenberg Jaya Jelly Sandals ($75) are selling out, but you can still find them online at Net-a-Porter. This gray color is a perfect summer neutral.
On the higher end of the price spectrum, Burberry Prorsum’s Knotted Leather Sandals ($475) would work as easily for a fashion show as they do for a day of city errands.
Are gladiators still in? Yes, because they’re so practical that no one’s putting them aside. But forego the studs in favor of this season’s leather detailing, like the incredible craftsmanship of these Alaia Metallic Leather Gladiator Flats ($1,870).
Another great style with tubular leather straps is the less-expensive Belle by Sigerson Morrison Tubular Sandals ($195).
One designer who really understands comfort is Prada. Prada Sport shoes, like these Prada Sport Saffiano Sandals ($280 on sale at Bluefly.com), will last you for years.
For a nighttime version, opt for these chic Prada Red Patent Leather Sandals ($316 on sale at Bluefly.com).
Animal prints are a must-have this season. The best leopard print ballet flats we’ve found are these French Sole Olivia Shoes in Leopard ($195), which will also last you until the next time leopard’s in fashion.
As noted, boots aren’t going anywhere just because winter’s over. On a bad pedicure day, kick around in a pair of these Jeffrey Campbell Brit Wrap Strap Booties ($230).
Of course there are those times, especially at summer weddings, when heels are a must – until you’ve been standing in them for five hours. Put a pair of Roll Upz ($20) flats in your clutch for the after party. They roll right up and fit in tiny handbags.
