May Day, Union Square
Posted by bellastraniera - 17/05/10 at 06:05 pm On a recent brilliantly sunny, low-humidity day, it was like California in Union Square. This slightly cool spring afternoon called for creative layering. Think silk scarves and jackets over shorts, dresses and tees: it should always be easy to shed a few layers and take in the sun.
An animal-print silk scarf is a fast and easy way to embellish a standard outfit of jeans, tee, and shrunken leather jacket. Ballet flats with a black lace overlay pick up the pattern.
Don’t put away your boots just because the weather’s warmer. They aren’t going anywhere for summer. Here, gray boots paired with a gingham romper and khaki trench.
A transitional look of a blanket-y, Navajo-style jacket paired with white sunglasses and satchel bag.
Chambray is huge for spring/summer 2010. Also note: you don’t need a jacket to wear a scarf. You can wear them with short-sleeved or sleeveless shirts and dresses too.
A cool vintage-y outfit paired with wooden wedge heels – another major S/S 2010 trend.
Gray becomes the new black every time the temperature climbs in NYC.
Plaid shirts still look cool as long as they aren’t too lumberjack-y. One way to accomplish this: lose the beard.
A creative and daring look of menswear on women, taken to the extreme. She really is wearing all men’s clothing, feminized by the single yellow scarf.
Floral shorts and boots. This flowy look and cuffed shorts are the key silhouettes for shorts now.
A gray shirtdress is professional and lightweight.
Love the slouchy trousers and cropped leather jacket. Striped nautical tees are a must-have item this spring.
Liking this pop of tomato red color as an optimistic hit for this year. Tomato red was a big part of the Marc by Marc Jacobs 2010 collections, both spring and fall.
New obsession: khaki pants. They should be the late 70s/80s-style khakis like these, as if you just stepped out of The Preppy Handbook. Either pleated or flat front works, but the fit should be loose.
The same look works for women.
Gray for guys, plus big headphones and 80s-style high tops in metallic silver.
More nautical stripes and a neckerchief = urban pirate.
