Heat Wave, East Village

How do you keep your cool in the East Village during a heat wave? Summer may call for gingham prints and khakis in the Hamptons, but that look just won’t fly in this neighborhood, formerly ground zero for New York’s punk movement. Savvy dressers managed to keep the edge without looking like an excerpt from Goths in Hot Weather.

Black White and Red, East Village

Rule No. 1: Don’t cave into pastels. Graphic red, white and black keep this look sharp and citified.

All White, East Village

Vintage bikes were one of the breezier ways to get around. Here with all white linen and pink flip flops.

Straw Hat, East Village

Tinted shades, a straw fedora and an unusual tee set this summer uniform apart from its suburban counterpart.

Polka Dots, East Village

The hot shorts and polka dot top are sexy and a little rockabilly, while the plain black espadrilles keep the look from getting into theme territory.

Tank Top and Straw Fedora, East Village

A tank top can look great on a guy when mixed up with more formal elements like a banded fedora and belted shorts.

Acid Wash Jean Shorts, East Village

Another good thing about summer city fashion – it’s cheap. This look of cropped acid wash jean shorts can easily be recreated with thrift-store denim. Bag with German print, in honor of yesterday’s World Cup game.

Doc Martens, East Village

Tattoos and Doc Martens get feminized with a flower in her hair, plus lots of color.

Draped Cotton Dress, East Village

A draped and layered cotton dress adds an interesting twist to the traditional summer shift.

Tie-Dye Dress, East Village

Tie-dye has gone far from its Woodstock roots, now appearing in more somber colors on many more items than T-shirts.

Striped Tunic, East Village

Playing with scale and silhouette: a ruffled asymmetrical tunic worn over leggings.
