The Breslin Bar Is Open
Posted by bellastraniera - 02/10/09 at 12:10 pm While we may have to wait a little longer for April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman’s new restaurant to start serving, the Breslin Bar in the lobby of the Ace Hotel is already open. It’s worth going to this new spot north of the Flatiron District just for the interior alone, designed by Roman & Williams: think 1940s school for math and sciences. The oak-paneled bar area in the back, decorated with vintage books, attracted a cool, laid back crowd on a recent weeknight.More (iPhone) photos and details, after the jump.
Vintage laboratory-type lights affixed to metal rods circle the huge columns in this double-height ceiling space. In the center of the one-room space, a library table attracted both drinkers and a woman tapping away on her laptop. The design can feel a little chilly, especially because the lobby was literally cold that night, but the big leather couches kept everybody comfortable.
Taxidermy is nothing new, here all of the stuffed animals here were baring their teeth!
Another snarling stuffed animal head guarded the kitchen door.
On one side of the room, a stairwell is papered by the work of controversial artist Michael Anderson, who collects graffiti’d stickers from the street and forms them into collages. Here’s a sample of his work from his website.
Wines by the glass were quite good, presumably a sneak preview of the wines to come at the Breslin. Many rooms at the Ace Hotel are even listed as “cheap” on the website, coming in at under $300 a night. Good to know for cheap friends and family visiting New York.
