Lower Broadway

So long, bare legs and flip flops: the chill of late autumn settled in this week on lower Broadway in New York, where layers and coats were the order of the day. Most people opted for a palette of neutrals (so much easier to coordinate), though every once in a while a flash of fall colors walked by, as on this stylish woman, below.

Love the vintage feel of this rust-colored fall coat. Look for more pom pom and tassel hats like this as the weather gets colder. The azure blue of her shoes is such a nice contrast.

This is how flat boots can be both chic and comfortable. They actually look better when they’re a little beat-up. The satchel is the silhouette of the moment for bags, worn cross body like this one. And that gray jacket is perfection.

OK, so she’s wearing gray sweatsuit material, but she gets a free pass because it’s a sweatshirt, not sweatpants – and the hood is very fetching worn up on a cold day. The legwarmers add a cute element to sexy zip up open toe shoes, worn here with gray socks. Great personal style.

These flat boots are the color of wellies but the style is modified biker. Like the pop of red from the belt.

Cognac-colored flat boots paired with a plain double-breasted wool jacket. Look for more simple wool coats this winter, as people of all political inclinations renounce the fur-trimmed puffer jackets of seasons past in favor of “a respectable Republican cloth coat” to telegraph thrift. The minimalism and neutral colors we’re seeing now recalls the early to mid ’90s, when we were also reeling from a recession, and everybody but everybody had a plain black wool Calvin Klein coat. (They weren’t as expensive then.)

Of course, fur will always be popular with a certain glamour set. But note how now it’s all about draped layers.
