Beat the Heat Fashion

Just because the mercury’s pushing 90 doesn’t mean most New Yorkers can give up running errands, grabbing lunch, or generally stepping out into the concrete jungle. Shorts, shirt dresses, slouchy layers, and buttoned-down-but-breezy work outfits were the order of the day on a very hot afternoon on Ladies’ Mile, the stretch of lower Fifth Avenue that has attracted chic shoppers for over a century now.
This was one of the best outfits we saw all day, chic but effortless. The wide stripes and red trim of this sailor top set it apart from the rest, and daringly, she has mixed cute with tough by choosing a studded belt for the baggy denim shorts.
Okay, okay: so this guy is wearing the urban interpretation of preppy style, but it’s still well put together. Khakis get an update when they’re rolled up, and the old-fashioned bow tie and fedora match the relative formality of the white bucks.
This is a great transition outfit from August to fall: reddish-brown suede slouchy boots mixed with an otherwise neutral layered look.
A perfectly crisp shirt dress can keep you cool but looking put-together for the office or errands. The ladylike but practical T-strap sandals are a wise concession to the heat. She also elevates an otherwise casual outfit with a nice handbag.
Thank God most offices have gotten rid of the no-sleeveless-tops rule. (Thanks, Michelle Obama!) This ruffled one looks great with a pencil skirt.
The most important thing about her look is her unabashedly big afro, a style we’ve been seeing more and more of recently. This feminine, natural hairstyle goes well with the hippie-ish tie-dye pants and slouchy silhouette. Note the cross body bag – practical and fashionable.
Another ruffly sleeveless top paired with a pencil skirt. Narrow pencil skirts – and even tube skirts – should be the silhouette of choice through the rest of the year.
Here’s an example of mens’ white pants in an urban environment, as first noted by Bill Cunningham on Sunday.
As plaid shirts and now the “boyfriend shirt” gain ascendancy in women’s fashion, the quandary becomes: how do you wear them and still look feminine? This young woman solves the problem by pairing a boyish shirt with super feminine short shorts, then mixing it up some more with geek-chic glasses. And no, you don’t even have to be tall to pull off this look – though it does help to have good gams.
A first sighting of the flat oxfords that are predicted to become very popular any minute now. Will they still look good if you don’t have legs up to here? Fortunately, oxfords with low and even high heels are also in.
A high-waisted skirt paired with brown belt and sandals looks polished but effortless.
This summer, shorts have left the terrain of the purely athletic and become dressy. It started last summer, but fortunately, now less expensive brands like J. Crew have also embraced the trend.
How do you pair a slouchy skirt with a voluminous skirt without looking swallowed up? Opt for lightweight, even sheer material that hits right at the hip, as this woman’s blouse does. The straw fedora and low heels add structure.
We liked this guy’s outfit because it was so not cookie-cutter, unlike the gazillion guys wearing tees and plaid shorts now. Colored jeans will be in style through the rest of the year, and the striped shirt paired with wild hair is just Euro enough without being over-the-top. Plus, he has a beagle!
