Though Marc by Marc Jacobs is an American brand, the clothes have this quirky chic that seems quintessentially Parisian – even more so now that Marc lives in Paris. Lynn Yaeger stood outside with one of her reporter colleagues, marveling at all the clothes going by. The show attracts a creative crowd that really sees fashion as a form of self-expression – including Yaeger herself.
Definitely one of Yaeger’s most fabulous outfits ever. Her sense of style is timeless – for instance, she’s been wearing oxfords, one of the big trends of the season, for years now, and the intarsia doggie detail on the corner of her sweater evoked the lions in the “Doctor Doolittle” theme of Anna Sui’s show – the show that would take place the day after this photo was taken.
Sarah Rutson, looking even more glamorous when among mere mortals. Note that she is wearing flat sandals again – a significant sign of potential heel height change. Rutson has always been a shoe influencer, wearing badass gladiator heels before anyone else. Andre Leon Talley predicted in Vogue several months ago that towering stilettos would be out this season. That hasn’t happened yet, but maybe next season?
A simple but sophisticated look of a cream dress with cap-toe boots and an orange bag.
Great stripes – and black and white is a great bet for seasonal transitions. The shoes are a clever peep-toe riff on boat shoes.
Joe Zee is truly a workin’ Joe. You have to really love fashion to go to as many shows as he does and maintain such a high level of enthusiasm throughout. But he doesn’t dress like a fashion wacko – any guy could take style tips from him.
A girl in the neon ’80s colors that populated Marc Jacobs’ fall 2009 show. The fluorescent brights haven’t been as popular as you might think among the fashion set, given that they were the brainchild of MJ, but that might be because they take chutzpah – there’s no chance of blending into the background with this look.
More leather shorts.
A fellow photog in a bitchin’ outfit. The toughness of this leather dress really lends itself to battling the paparazzi, and the sweatsuit-material jumpsuit moves freely. Just don’t step on anyone’s toes in those heels.
The black leather jacket is the new cardigan.
There definitely haven’t been as many fedoras this season as last – perhaps a blessing – but that also may be why they look more original when we see them now. Here a crisp straw fedora with an orange and blue print minidress.
Sofia Coppola talks to a reporter. This red dress and statement necklace are great on her.
Amazing blue velvet suit. Keep an eye out for black and white spectator shoes too this season. The whole look is tough-posh when you take into account his partially-shaved head (another big trend for men and women). And note his fingernails – they’re painted blue! Indeed, fingernails should be used as a palette for Pantone colors, whatever color strikes your fancy at the moment.
More black and white – including an Alexander Wang bandage skirt.
A great colorful outfit – but especially note her legs. Those are embellished knee socks!
Leopard print dress, front, leopard print shoes, back.
Hamish Bowles is always making visual puns with his clothes and accessories – like the purple suede shoes that match the purple tie that matches the purple composition notebook. The man cannot be outdressed.
Meredith Melling Burke on the run. Because his signature show is now as punctual as the military unit that occupies the Armory, Marc Jacobs has instilled a sense of near-panic in his guests when they are late. Touche….
Hilary Alexander in a red floral dress. She was wearing statement necklaces long before the rest of the crowd.
A good example of how to repurpose your clothes – this white blouse is from the Rodarte CFDA collection for Gap (publicist extraordinaire Rachna Shah of KCD introduced me to it) and it still looks great worn with a purple pencil skirt and accessorized with a Chanel bag.
Poor Carine Roitfeld literally running to the show in strappy stilettos. Never say she doesn’t exercise!
Hear me now and believe me later: Pleated trousers are back for men, and flat-front pants are going to start looking old hat very soon.
Ken Downing in action!
Photo shoot in front of one of the military jeeps parked against the street. She’s rolled up beautiful linen pants and worn them with oxfords.
Black-and-white animal print dress and studded flat booties.
Don’t be fooled by the cliche of the fashion editor in all black – much of fashion is knowing how to work prints and colors and ornamentation, as these women do.
Beautiful structure and draping – architectural elements that should be very important for the upcoming seasons. And the fact that the pants are made of sweatsuit material is a sly wink to comfort.
The inimitable Suzy Menkes in a black silk coat, carrying a leopard bag and DVF tote.
An ultra-glamorous Anna Dello Russo in a gorgeous orange Lanvin dress.
Beauty note: Her blue eyeliner matches her shoes. Pretty brill.
Style icon Kate Lanphear. This look is very Yves Saint Laurent – masculine, but dangerously feminine with the studded heels and bracelets.
Here are her Louboutins up close. They’re so irresistible it’s hard not to impale yourself upon them.
This outfit is just darling – a real sense of personal style. Stetson-esque fedora with a double-breasted blue blazer. Even the scarf peeking out is artfully ruched, and you rarely see a blazer paired with a shirt with a rounded collar like this one. Note how to wear oxfords: the cuffs of your pants rolled up, so as best to show them off.
Olivier Zahm may be a badass art critic, but he still takes time to hang with the artists – in this case backstage photographers. He has a rock and roll look that never goes out of style.
