Bruno: The Fashion World Reacts

Giving credence to the idea that fashion is part masochism, several in the fashion industry are disappointed that they weren’t parodied by Bruno, according to an amusing article in today’s WWD, “The In Kraut.” The much-anticipated fashion farce premieres tonight at midnight.
Trish Halpin, editor in chief of Marie Claire: “Getting name checked in Bruno is the ultimate fashion accessory. People want to be in the movie. It’s more insulting not to appear in it than to be insulted in it.”
Diane von Furstenburg: “He didn’t come to my fashion show. But I wish he had.”
And if you are insulted by Bruno? Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, whose show was terrorized by Bruno this winter, said: “I was furious with that man… there he was turning my show into a nightmare, and I wanted to kill him.” But upon later reflection (in the company of a WWD reporter, naturally), she concludes: “It can be amusing, no? Besides, he’s given me a lot of publicity.”
Even Paul Wilmot, who was embarrassed by an early incarnation of Bruno, who prompted him to mime a demonstration of safe sex on “Da Ali G Show,” has praise for the comedian: “This thing has a half life of plutonium. Someone just the other day came up to me in the Waverly Inn and said ‘You’re the Bruno guy.’ I actually think I’ve gotten business from it.” (Sadly, the clip is not available anywhere online, but you can see it on the first season of “Da Ali G. Show.”)
Designer Lloyd Klein, who was similarly shamed when Bruno convinced him to let him walk in a fashion show and told him he was a muse of the (fake) German designer Chrysler, became reflective five years later about Sacha Baron Cohen.
“He is a creator, like me. He can reinvent himself. That is very fashion.”
