Madonna was never a wallflower, but in the ’80s, she was really coming out of left field. Not only did she record totally racy songs and videos, she even made a movie…about herself. This amount of chutzpah was rarely seen in women at the time. Best of all, many of her antics involved fashion, whether it was dressing up like a slutty bride for “Like a Virgin” or pairing crucifix earrings with an exposed midriff in “Holiday.” But it was her outfits in Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) that really defined the Madonna ’80s style that still lingers today: big curly blond hair with dark roots, lots of rubber bracelets, tight jeans, motorcycle jackets, dance shoes, and piles and piles of accessories. She may have come from the Midwest, but her style was quintessential ’80s New York club kid.
