’80s Fashion: Top 10 Most Influential Movies and TV

Chances are, no one realized in 1983 how important Flashdance would be to fashion. There are looks that came out of this movie that are still bouncing around, most notably the whole oversized, off-the-shoulder silhouette of Jennifer Beals’ sweatshirt. Now you see the same cut in luxury materials in designer clothes, like this wool and alpaca sweater dress by Adam, worn by Alexa Chung in today’s WWD.
Another important fashion development that stemmed from this movie was the incorporation of dance clothing into everyday fashion. Obviously dance looks are a driving force in the design at American Apparel. Even if you aren’t drinking Dov Charney’s particular brand of Kool Aid, chances are you’ve worn leggings recently, and! Lycra.
Oh yes, and Flashdance is also largely responsible for leg warmers.
