Word of a new “Gossip Girl” spinoff set in the ’80s had us doing some research. There were a gazillion movies – especially teen movies – in the ’80s, but which of them made a true impact on the way people dressed? After the jump, a rundown of the most influential ’80s movies, TV, and music videos from the time – because power suits and rubber bracelets had to come from somewhere.
Valley Girl (1983), a teen B-movie starring a very young Nicolas Cage, could be an example of what not to wear from the ’80s. Still, several important ’80s trends were spurred on by this movie, including winged hair, pastel colors (like the pastel plastic sunglasses seen on the runway for Walter SS09), and – omigod! – bandanas.
