May Playlist: Theresa Anderson, Miike Snow, Lykke Li, and More

This is what I’ve been listening to in May 2009: a mix of artists from Sweden, Scotland, New Orleans, Paris, and LA. One recorded an album in her kitchen,  using wine glasses and beer bottles for percussion. Another is a rockabilly sensation…from London. Several of the bands are “overnight successes” that actually put in years of work to get that moniker; others are teenagers. Thanks are owed to KCRW and D. for the discoveries. Theresa Anderson
Origin: New Orleans, LA originally from Gotland, Sweden
Formed: 1994
Style: Her latest pop-rock album was recorded in her kitchen using things like wine glasses and beer bottles.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis
Origin: North London, England
Formed: 2005
Style: Rockabilly, vintage country, rhythm and blues

The Jesus and Mary Chain
Origin: Glasgow, Scotland
Formed: 1984
Style: White noise Velvet Underground

Lykke Li
Origin: Stockholm, Sweden
Formed: early 2000s
Style: Spare, structured pop-rock with ethereal vocals

Miike Snow
Origin: Stockholm, Sweden and New York, NY
Formed: 2007
Style: New indie-electro pop band made up of a trio of successful music producers

Phoenix
Origin: Paris, France
Formed: 1990s
Style: Electric pop-rock in the style of The Whitest Boy Alive. Played on SNL a few weeks ago.

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band
Origin: Omaha, NE (Oberst)
Formed: 2008
Style: Great new Southern rock, Allman brothers redux

Hockey
Origin: Portland, OR
Formed: ?
Style: Their early release “Too Fake” is built on a David Byrne sample (?) and overlaid with rock and White-Stripes-esque vocals.

Camera Obscura
Origin: Glasgow, Scotland
Formed: 1996
Style: If you like Belle & Sebastian, you’ll love Camera Obscura – especially their new album, My Maudlin Career.

Manu Chao
Origin: Paris, France
Formed: early 1980s
Style: Latin alternative, with a funky sound and lyrics that mix Spanish, French, and English.

Earlimart
Origin: Los Angeles, CA
Formed: 1996
Style: Indie pop in the style of Luna
