Buy it, sync it, and blast it – this is the best of Michael Jackson, from the Jackson 5 days up until the late ’80s. Every song is worth every cent and then some.
I feel lucky to be old enough to remember the phenomenon that was Michael Jackson, especially when Thriller came out. The entire country – then the world – was obsessed with his music, his fashion, his every dance move. Kids were begging for bright red leather jackets, wearing one glove, and dancing, dancing dancing. It was like one great mass infatuation. There has never been anything like it since.
Listening to these songs now, you’ll find the music as infectious as it was when it first came out. Here are 19 of the best, in roughly chronological order. Buy it here
Some takeaways from last night’s news:
- Cher called into Larry King and remembered going out with Michael Jackson and Val Kilmer to a party, and Jackson became fixated on Kilmer’s beaded socks, which Bob Mackie had designed for him for a show. So now we know where Michael Jackson’s socks idea came from – and maybe the glove? Bob Mackie’s fabulous costume influence at work.
- Anderson Cooper – I swear he was a bit teary-eyed – remembered going to Studio 54 with Michael Jackson (and presumably mom Gloria Vanderbilt) at age 10. “I remember thinking that guy could really dance,” he said, then admitted that even then he hadn’t joined in the dancing (apparently he doesn’t dance). When another anchor asked about him being at Studio 54 at age 10, Cooper joked, “Somebody call child services.”
- WWD.com posted a slideshow of Michael Jackson’s fashion.

Cher had the best remark last night. After talking with her about Jackson, he brought up Farrah Fawcett, and she says, “yeah. yeah. I’ve had a really tough day.”
